It all started from a Christmas card of objects. The selection of objects led to this “Substitutes: Necessity is the mother of invention” exhibition now displayed in Berlin at the Gallery Berlin-Weekly.com, curated by Stefanie Seidl of Gallery Berlin-Weekly and Fabian Baumann of Formfjord.
We know that there are many objects like bottle openers that may be often needed but not always on hand. When these objects are not easily accessible, substitutes are used, which require some level of creativity. This exhibit presents personal substitutes of 40 selected designers, artists, architects and photographers along with the objects they replace. The pair of objects give the story meaning.
“We did not want the participants to design especially for the exhibition but at the same time we want to give them a lot of room for creativity,” Baumann notes. That I think is part of the beauty of this exhibit. Check out some of these objects and you’ll see what I mean.
